The tutor walks them through the next one. The student nods again. The session ends with both feeling productive. Two days later, the student can't reproduce any of it on the quiz, the parent asks why their child is back where they started, and the company has billed for an hour that didn't compound.
Implement is the third stage of Smart Learn , and the stage where most tutoring quietly goes wrong. Watching someone solve a problem feels like learning, and isn't.
Smart Learn is the part of the framework that puts the work back in the student's hands, and matches the kind of work to the kind of mind doing it, so what happens in the session is what shows up on the quiz.
Why Implement matters
Implement is where active learning meets personalised pedagogy. Both halves matter.
Active learning is the half tutoring companies get most often. Decades of research on the testing effect, spaced practice, and effortful retrieval all point at the same finding: a brain that's trying to produce the answer learns the answer. A brain that's watching someone else produce the answer recognizes the answer, which feels the same but isn't. The first one shows up on the quiz. The second one doesn't.
Personalised pedagogy is the half tutoring companies get most rarely. Most platforms hand every student the same flashcard format, the same problem set, the same review structure. Smart Learn doesn't. The work is built for the student's intelligence profile, so a body-kinesthetic learner isn't reading their way through material a logical-mathematical learner would parse better in a table, and a musical learner isn't grinding flashcards their brain doesn't favor.
The research that grounds OPIR (r = 0.71 between reflection quality and final grade) ultimately measured what happens when short bursts of critical thought are applied over long periods of time. Implement is where the bursts get done. It's the stage that decides whether what was planned becomes what was learned.
Twenty-three strategies, calibrated to the student
Smart Learn ships with twenty-three Implement strategies, mapped across the eight intelligences. The sample below covers all eight.
Active Retrieval Practice (logical-mathematical, intrapersonal). After studying, close the notes and try to produce everything from memory. Check, find the gaps, restudy. Fits the student who learns best by testing themselves and watching the gaps shrink.
Teach-It-Aloud (verbal-linguistic, interpersonal). Explain the concept to a peer, a parent, or an empty chair. The places the explanation gets stuck are the places the understanding has gaps. Fits the student who only finds out what they don't understand when they try to put it into words.
Diagram Reconstruction (visual-spatial, body-kinesthetic). After studying a diagram or chart, redraw it from memory. The act of redrawing forces the student to rebuild the relationships, not just recognize them. Fits the student who thinks in pictures and learns by hand.
Gesture Encoding (body-kinesthetic). Pair a physical movement with the concept being learned. A specific hand motion attached to a definition is more memorable than the definition alone. Fits the student who fidgets through stillness and remembers what they did with their hands.
Concept-to-Song Translation (musical, verbal-linguistic). The musical learner takes the concept and writes lyrics about it. The platform's AI then generates a song from the lyrics in the genre the student chose. (The same AI-song capability also powers a few other musical strategies in Smart Learn.) The result is a track the student actually wants to play back, with the content embedded in something their brain hooks onto. Fits the student whose strongest channel is auditory and rhythmic.
The first song built this way was my son's. He's fourteen, on the autism spectrum, and he needed a way to remember the order of operations that his brain could actually hold. He wrote BEDMAS as lyrics, picked his genre, and the song that came out of it stuck the procedure for life. It ships as one of the example tracks bundled with the strategy. It is not a sentimental aside. It is the strongest argument I can make for what intelligence-mapped strategy actually does. A procedural sequence that wouldn't survive a flashcard can survive a bus ride.
BEDMAS song
Written as lyrics by my fourteen-year-old son, on the autism spectrum, then generated in the genre he chose.
Classification Sorting (naturalistic). Organize information into categories: vocabulary by root, concepts by family, equations by type. The act of sorting reveals patterns the student couldn't see when the items were one big list. Fits the student who thinks in families and systems.
Multimodal Strategy Stacking (all eight intelligences). The meta-strategy. For high-stakes content, combine three or four of the above. Reconstruct the diagram, then teach it aloud, then turn the key terms into a song, then quiz yourself the next morning. Each pass uses a different intelligence, and the content sinks deeper instead of staying surface. Fits any student facing a test they cannot afford to fail.
The remaining sixteen strategies cover variations: audio-recorded self-explanation, peer question banks, error-pattern tracking, concept gallery walks, rhythm recall drills, and others. The tools inside Bizstim
Seven of Smart Learn's ten tool canvases carry Implement strategies, more than any other stage in the loop. The whole framework runs eighty strategies across eight intelligences from those ten templates, with each canvas reconfiguring itself for whichever strategy is running on top. Implement is where the eight intelligences and the twenty-three strategies most visibly meet software the student touches. Four of those tools do most of the work at this stage.
The first is Flashcards and Q&A. Flashcards are text in and text out. That hasn't changed. What Smart Learn does change is how the tool gets used. An interpersonal learner can invite a parent or peer into the deck as a guest; they work the cards together, take the quiz independently afterward, and the platform tracks both scores separately. An intrapersonal learner runs the same deck solo and tracks their own progress over time. Some intelligences aren't well served by flashcards in any configuration, and that's fine, because Smart Learn has nine other canvases for the ones flashcards can't reach.
The second is Diagram Reconstruction, a single-purpose canvas built around one of the most reliable techniques in cognitive research. It serves visual-spatial and body-kinesthetic learners, which forces a question most browser tools dodge: you cannot make a screen physical. Diagram Reconstruction's answer is to let the body-kinesthetic part happen on paper. The student studies the diagram, hides it, then reconstructs it from memory either on the canvas or on a sheet of paper. If they worked offline, they upload a photo. Either way, the tool puts the reconstruction next to the original so the gaps become the next study cycle.
The third is the Kanban Board, a column-and-card canvas whose columns are defined by the strategy running on it. Visual Chunking Boards (a visual-spatial strategy) gives the student three "chunk" columns to rename around the topic and fill with related ideas. Collaborative Problem Solving (an interpersonal strategy) gives a group three columns: how each person sees the problem, how each would tackle it, and what they actually tried together. Same canvas, two completely different shapes, because the strategy on top decides what the columns mean.
The fourth is the Reflection Form, the most-used canvas at this stage (nine of the twenty-three Implement strategies live on it). It's a flexible recording surface: the fields, prompts, and capture mode all change based on the strategy running on top. Self-Explanation Recording and Audio Notes turn on both speech-to-text and text-to-speech, so the student can dictate aloud and have the form transcribe, or have their notes read back. Concept Gallery Walk adds photo upload. Concept-to-Song Translation captures lyrics that the platform's AI then turns into a song. The form is the consistent element; the strategy is what shapes the entry.
The remaining three tools, Checklist Builder, Log & Tracker, and the Sorting Matrix, host the rest of the Implement strategies. The first two also show up in Organize, where they earn their primary keep; at Implement they carry self-check-ins and error-pattern tracking. The Sorting Matrix runs two naturalistic strategies that organize material into categories or compare it across a grid, both versions of the same idea: when the items can be sorted, the sorting itself is the learning.
What changes for the tutor at the table
For tutors, Implement is where the framework most visibly takes the weight off. A newer tutor walking into a session no longer has to invent on the fly which technique to try with which student. The software has already picked. The tutor's job is to deliver the chosen strategy, watch how the student responds, and adjust if it isn't landing.
For senior tutors, Implement is where their experience finally compounds instead of resetting. A senior tutor who has seen which strategies work for which student profiles is no longer carrying that knowledge alone in their head. Smart Learn captures the pattern, applies it to the next student with a similar profile, and keeps applying it after that tutor goes on vacation, leaves the company, or just has a tired Tuesday. The senior tutor's judgment becomes part of the platform, not part of the person.
What changes for your tutoring business
For an owner, Implement is the stage that does the most work on two of the three reasons Smart Learn exists.
It's the stage where parents see Smart Learn doing what most platforms only promise. A parent who watches their child sing a song to remember BEDMAS, or rebuild a diagram from memory, or move concept cards across a Kanban board, sees something concrete happening between sessions. That visibility is the difference between a renewal and a quiet drift. Parents pay for outcomes, but they renew because of evidence, and Implement is where the evidence is most visible week to week.
It's also the stage where the framework cuts deepest into tutor churn. Tutoring is a hard job in the moments when the tutor has nothing to fall back on. Implement is where those moments cluster. The session is happening, the student isn't getting it, and the tutor has to invent the next thing to try with seconds to spare. Smart Learn replaces that pressure with a system. The tutor still does the teaching, but they're never out of options, and the cognitive load that used to drive newer tutors out of the company is now carried by software that doesn't burn out.
From Implement to Reflect
Implement is where the work happens, but it's not where the loop ends. A student who studies hard, performs well on the test, and then forgets everything by the next month has done the work and lost the work. The stage that prevents that is the next one.
